The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors involved, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
