The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
